Time To Make Moves

Believe it or not, the end of the season is quickly approaching and time is running out for teams to make their moves to get to the playoff positions they hope to be in at the end.
Eric Korver fires his tee shot on #17 and lands on the green.
The middle of the pack is still relatively close and a lot can change in the weeks ahead.

Scoring continues to be tough this season as only four teams, the KGB, Fat Shafts, Southpaws and Dubbers were able to shoot sub-100 rounds as a team tonight.

The KGB, Fat Shafts and Whizbangers all took six points in their rounds for the evening. Five points were earned by the Dubbers and Southpaws while the Hackers grabbed four points. The CCCP took two points while single points went to the Bogies and Wedgers.

The low score for the evening was turned in by Tim Donaldson with an even par round of 27. The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Turtle on hole #5 and Denis Schick on hole #14. Benny Brock was the 50/50 winner.

New Team Low Gross

While driving to the golf course tonight I wasn't sure if we would be lucky enough to get our night in but fortunately the thunderstorms didn't develop and we were able to play a storm free round.

The KGB were the hottest team on this evening as they posted a team score of 93, good enough to take over sole possession of the Team Low Gross spot.
Jim Bruce tees off on Hole 14.
Nice shooting guys. The Low round of the night was turned in by Kyle Wilkinson who shot a two over par 29.

The first place Fat Shafts were one of four teams to sweep all six points in their matches. The Dubbers, Rolling Stones and Whizbangers also blanked their opponents. The KGB came close earning five points while the Wedgers took four from the Latecomers who settled for two points. The Hackers finished the night with a single point.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Tom St.Denis on hole #6 and Ralph Lambert on hole #15. Eric Korver was the 50/50 winner this week.

Season Heats Up

The black flies and mosquitoes were plentiful but nobody seemed to care too much because thankfully we had some warmer weather finally. But judging by the scores, the temperature was the only thing that was hot.

Four of the six matches tonight swept all of the available points as the KGB, Dubbers, Latecomers and Rolling Stones each earned six points. The CCCP took five points while the Fat Shafts managed four points against the Whizbangers who took two. The Southpaws tied the net in their match and picked up one point.

Scoring proved tough tonight as only two teams shot below 100. The KGB posted a 95 and the Fat Shafts turned in a 98.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Symen Korver on hole #4 and Al Wilkinson on hole #13. Tom St.Denis was the 50/50 winner this week.

2017 Season Commences

After a long winter and a late start thanks to Mother Nature, we finally kicked off the 2017 Men's League with an exceptional night weather wise.
Bob Donaldson tees off on #16.
Even most of the bugs failed to show up.

A special welcome to the new faces that have joined the fun this season and it was nice to see so many diehards back at it for another year.

Four teams started off strong by sweeping their matches. The Fat Shafts, Fivesome, Rolling Stones and CCCP all earned six points. The Dubbers and KGB each took four points while two points each went to the Latecomers and Whizbangers.

Andy Koetstra and Kyle Wilkinson each shot 29 to set the early target for Individual Low Gross. The Team Low Gross after night one was set by the KGB after shooting a solid round of 94.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Eric Korver on hole #1 and Andy Koetstra on hole #10. Rick Stuckless was the years first 50/50 winner.

Ideal Conditions to Golf

Scores aside perhaps, I don't think anyone could complain about the conditions for golf tonight.
Dave Reid misses a lengthy putt on hole 13.
Sure, there were some bugs but it was an ideal temperature and a beautiful sunny night.

The standings continue to be crowded in sections after play this evening. The Southpaws moved to within one point of the front running Fat Shafts while the Rolling Stones stumbled a bit allowing the Dubbers to move into third place.

Just like last week, three teams swept their matches as the KGB, Hackers and Southpaws took six points. The Fat Shafts and Dubbers came close taking five points each. The Whizbangers had four points while the Rolling Stones grabbed two. The Bogies and Fivesome took one point each.

Tim Donaldson came up one stroke shy of grabbing a share of the Individual Low Gross score by shooting 27 tonight. The Southpaws as a team shot a 93 which also left them short of equaling the mark of 91 held by the Whizbangers. The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Dean on hole #7 and Kyle Wilkinson on hole #16. The 50/50 winner was Dave Powell.

Rick Dean Was Dialed In Tonight

After a slow start for many to the season, the cobwebs are starting to disappear and the lower scores are being posted. Rick Dean was turned in the lowest individual round of the young season tonight by shooting a one under par round of 26. Paul Reid also had an impressive even par round of 27 this evening as well.

It was almost another week of clean sweeps in the matches with the Fivesome, Southpaws, KGB, Rolling Stones and Wedgers all taking six points. The Fat Shafts earned four points while the Dubbers took two.

The Closest to the Pin winners tonight were Symen Korver on hole #3 with a very tight shot while Tyler Donaldson also put his tee shot close on hole #12. The 50/50 winner was Randy Conley.

A clerical error week one resulted in a missed low team score and the Team Low Gross being reported erroneously. The current leaders in this category are the Whizbangers with a score of 91. Sorry for the confusion.

Good Start to the Season

There was no rain or snow, so right off the bat we started men's league with weather we couldn't complain about.
Lyle Williams tees off on 16.
Add to that the fact there were no bugs and the course was dry and we couldn't have asked for a better first night of league play.

It was nice to see some new faces out tonight and good to see the familiar ones as well after a long winter.

The season began with some impressive play including Denis Schick who set the bar for Individual Low Gross by turning in an impressive even par score of 27. The Closest to the Pin winners were Eric Korver on hole #1 while Tim Donaldson stuck his tee shot close on hole #10. Donaldson was also the years first winner of the 50/50.

In team play, the Whizbangers and Southpaws took all six points in their matches while the Dubbers grabbed five. The Fivesome, Wedgers and Fat Shafts each took four points. The Latecomers, Bogies and Rolling Stones earned two points each while a single point went to the KGB.

The Team Low Gross was turned in by the Fat Shafts with a 95.

2015 Playoffs - Second Nine

After a scorcher of a round last week, I don’t think anyone was complaining about the temperatures we were blessed with for week two of the playoffs and the second nine holes from the white tees.

Andy Koetstra of the Fat Shafts posted the low round for the evening by shooting a 26.

In the “A” Division, as most expected, it remains a two team race for the title after 18 holes. The Southpaws hold a slim one stroke lead over the Rolling Stones after shooting an 89 tonight and a total of 183. The Stones and Fat Shafts both shot 90 while the Dubbers posted a 101.The Stones have a total of 184 while the Fat Shafts jumped into third, 10 shots off the pace with an 18 hole score of 193. The Dubbers are five strokes back in fourth with 198.

Barring a major collapse on Saturday, the Wedgers appear poised for an easy victory in the “B” Division. Their 90 for the evening leaves them with an 18 hole total of 179, best among all teams and 14 strokes ahead of the KGB with 193 after they played to a 97 tonight. The Whizbangers turned in a round of 95 to remain within six strokes of second place. The Fivesome, who shot 104, dropped to fourth place with a total of 203.

Over on the “C” flight, the Bogies continue to lead after 18 holes. They shot 97 this evening and have a team total of 196 heading into the final day. The Hackers, who shot 101, are within striking distance just 10 strokes behind. The CCCP had the high total for the night shooting 108 which dropped them into third place with a total of 208. Meanwhile the Latecomers shot a 106 and fell to fourth with a total of 211.

There were eight more Closest to the Pin holes to shoot for this evening with four on the front and four on the back nine. The winners were:

Hole #5: Nick Vangemeren
Hole #6: Andy Koetstra

Playoffs Are Set

It came down to the last night and in one case a single point but the regular season is complete and the playoffs are set to begin next week.

The "A" division teams were all known except for the final spot and the Fat Shafts leapfrogged the KGB tonight to grab fourth place by one point. That was the only real change that took place in determining where the teams are placed. The Southpaws claimed the regular season title for the fourth year in a row, edging out the Rolling Stones.

On this night, the CCCP, Dubbers, Southpaws, Rolling Stones and Fat Shafts all grabbed six points. The KGB took four points while the Latecomers took two points. The Closest to the Pin winners were Denis Schick on hole #1 and Eric Korver on hole #10. The 50/50 winner was Marty MacDonald.

Week one of the playoffs will start next Wednesday night followed by another nine holes the following Wednesday and then the 18 hole final on the Saturday that week beginning at 3pm.

Here are the playoff divisions:

Wilkinson Fires A 24

There were some doubts that we'd actually get this week's 18 hole round in without being washed away by rain or thunderstorms but luckily the bad weather stayed to the south and some impressive rounds of golf were turned in Wednesday night.

The most impressive round of the evening was shot by Kyle Wilkinson who posted a front nine hole score of 24 to take over the Individual Low Gross lead for the season. Norm Toyne's round of 25 was also impressive but not quite enough on this night. Lead by Wilkinson, the Rolling Stones also posted the new Team Low Gross score of 82.

The shot of the night however went to Symen Korver who sank his 143 yard tee shot on Hole #9 for a hole-in-one. Congratulations Symen!

The Closest to the Pin winners were Randy Conley on hole #7 and Dave Wharry on hole #16. Pat Convey was this week's 50/50 winner.

In team play the Southpaws, Rolling Stones and KGB took all 12 points up for grabs in their matches. The Wedgers came close taking 11 points while the Latecomers earned 10 points. The Whizbangers grabbed 9 points, the Fat Shafts improved their total on the season with another 3 points. The Bogies added a pair of points while a single point went to the Dubbers.

Just a reminder that next Wednesday will be another 18 hole round of golf. See you then!

A Strange Night

After giving a quick glance at the scores and team totals for the evening, it would appear that almost everyone had an off night on the course. I think only two teams shot in the 90's and the rest were over 100 which doesn't happen all that often. At least we were all in good company.

The Southpaws, who were in first place heading into the round, had a rare off night and managed only one point against the Whizbangers which dropped them to third place in the Standings (provided my totals are correct). Both the Dubbers and the Rolling Stones edged ahead of them.

Points won tonight were as follows... The CCCP and KGB were the only two teams to earn all six points up for grabs. The Whizbangers and Rolling Stones each took five points. The Dubbers and Wedgers managed four points in their matches and the Fat Shafts and Hackers took two points each. The Southpaws and Latecomers each earned single points.

There was only one Closest to the Pin winner tonight on Hole #16 as Peter Hughes dropped his shot tight and made the easy birdie putt. The front nine Closest to the Pin was not won by anyone due to an error. It was decided that the prize money would be donated by the league towards the fundraising efforts for the bench to be placed on the course in memory of Don Kovanen. The 50/50 Winner this week was Eric Korver. That's Eric's second win in three weeks.

A reminder that starting next Wednesday night (June 12) we play three weeks of 18 hole rounds from the White Tees. See you then!

Bugs In Our Game

Dave Walker in deep thought prior to his tee shot on Hole 17.
Its taken a while but those pesky bugs have arrived again. For some of us the bugs aren't just in our game. Rather, tonight the mosquitoes made their triumphant return to annoy us each and every shot. I kept reminding myself it's still better than the long winter we had. On the plus side, we managed to get the round in prior to watching another strong Spring storm system roll into the area.

Teams sweeping all six points in their matches tonight included the Rolling Stones, Southpaws, Latecomers and Bogies. The KGB and CCCP each earned four points while the Dubbers and Whizbangers took two points each.

The Closest to the Pin winners this evening were Nick Vangemeren on hole #5 and Tyler Donaldson on hole #14. Eric Korver was this weeks 50/50 winner.

That's More Like It!

After all the rain that fell in April and the resulting cancellation of last weeks round of golf, the arrival of May also brought much better golfing conditions as we returned to the course once again. I think we can all agree the warmer and dryer weather is a welcome sight.

Four teams swept their matches tonight as the Rolling Stones, Latecomers, Dubbers and KGB all earned six points. The Bogies and Wedgers took four points each while the Southpaws and Fivesome grabbed two points a piece.

Al Wilkinson had the low round of the night with a 28 but was one stroke shy of tying for the Individual Low Gross. The Closest to the Pin winners tonight were Ryan Cuculuzzi on hole #2 and Ian Rogers on hole #11. Symen Korver was this weeks 50/50 winner.

Wildlife and Insects Abound

On any given night at the golf course we can see various forms of wildlife. Some of the animal variety and some in the form of the golfers themselves. Tonight some golfers were fortunate enough to see deer while a family of foxes have also been spotted around the 12th hole. Mosquitoes were plentiful on hole #15 on this night although none of us thought they were cute and cuddly.

I was also informed that someone hit a horse to the left of the 12th hole and Dave Walker was wondering who it might have been. Rumour has it that Nick VanGemeren was the guilty party but that was only according to Dan Jess.

As for the golf on this beautiful evening there were some good and some not so good scores turned in but nobody really cared considering the ideal conditions. Grabbing all six points tonight were the Dubbers, KGB, Whizbangers and Wedgers. The Rolling Stones and Southpaws took four each while the Fat Shafts and CCCP earned two.

The 50/50 winner was Ron MacDonald. Closest to the Pin winners were Eric Korver on hole #7 and Kim Defosse on hole #16.
