2016 Playoffs - Final Round

What a way to wrap up a year that never saw one rain out or lost night due to bad weather. Typical of the summer of 2016, we had probably one of, if not the hottest night for a final round ever

Storms threatened and the forecast was ominous so we shortened the number of holes we'd play and it worked in our favour as the thunderstorms and tornado watches eventually showed up after we finished.

The "A" Flight champs were the Southpaws who nearly let a large lead slip away but held on for a six stroke victory over the Rolling Stones. The Fat Shafts came in third and were ten shots off the pace while the KGB came fourth.

Over in the "B" Flight, the Dubbers had a strong final round to increase their lead and cruise to a 15 stroke margin of victory over the Whizbangers. The Bogies took third place while the Hackers came last in the flight.

The "C" Flight was a runaway contest from start to finish as the Wedgers cruised to the win finishing 23 strokes ahead of the second place Latecomers. The Fivesome were third and the CCCP trailed in fourth spot.

Congratulations to all of the closest to the pin winners who were too numerous to mention and also the prize winners.

Despite the rain, a good chunk of change was raised during the putting contest to be donated towards the Terry Fox foundation and the annual golf tournament at the course this coming October.

A special thanks to Steve Powell for all of his hard work once again this season to make not only today run smoothly but for all of his efforts all season long.
Thanks also to Tom and Alida St.Denis for another wonderful year of golf. Despite the intense heat and dry conditions this summer the course continued to be in great shape and a constant challenge. Our thanks to Debbie Stewart for assisting Alida on this final night with making sure everyone was fed and taken care of.

Below you will find the final totals for the playoffs along with some photos and videos I took during the day. I hope you enjoy them and I hope you enjoyed the league blog again this season. If all goes well, I'll be back to do it again next season. Have a great winter and we'll see you again in the Spring.

2016 Playoffs - Round One

Scattered showers around the area gave way to a warm and clear evening as the playoffs got underway tonight.

In the "A" Flight, the Southpaws shot the low round of the night, posting an impressive 85 and hold a four stroke advantage after round one. Andy Koetstra had the low round of the evening shooting a 25 to lead the Fat Shafts to the only other sub 90 round as they scored an 89.
Andy Koetstra starts his round on hole #1.
The Rolling Stones are seven shots off the pace with a 92 while the KGB posted a round of 97.

In the "B" Flight, just one stroke separates the Dubbers and Whizbangers. Tom St.Denis turned in a round of 31 to help his team to a total of 97 while the Whizbangers scored a 98. The Bogies are only six strokes back after putting up a 103 while the Hackers struggled and shot 113.

Over in the "C" Flight, the Wedgers have a little wiggle room after Norm Toyne posted a round of 28 to lead his team to a score of 97. The Latecomers are 7 strokes off the lead after a round of 104. CCCP scored 108 on the night and are 11 shots back while the Fivesome have some ground to make up after scoring  a 111.

Fat Shafts Regular Season Champs

After clinching the regular season the last four years, the Southpaws will have to settle for second place as the Fat Shafts claimed their first league title.

It came down to the final night.
Lyle Williams launches his shot towards the 16th green.
The Fat Shafts held a slim one point lead heading into the final round and after both teams took all six points in their matches, the Fat Shafts finished the season with a total of 111 points to the Southpaws 110.

The Latecomers also took six points while the KGB and Dubbers each earned four points. The Hackers and Rolling Stones tied with three points each while the Fivesome and Wedgers grabbed two points apiece. Kyle Wilkinson wins the Indivdual Low Gross prize for the year with his impressive round of 24. The Rolling Stones earn the Team Low Gross with their round of 84.

The Whizbangers and Latecomers finished in a tie for 8th place, however the Whizbangers had more points in head to head play and win the tie breaker to earn the final spot in the "B" division for the playoffs.

The Closest to the Pin winners tonight were Kevin Wadsworth on hole #1 and Andy Koetstra on hole #10. The 50/50 winner was Randy Grills.

The Playoffs start next week with nine holes from the white tees the next two Wednesday nights. The final 18 holes from the blue tees will take place on Saturday September 10th.

Slim Lead for Fat Shafts

With only one week remaining in the regular season some of the final positions for the playoffs have yet to be decided and first overall will come down to the last week.

The Hackers still have a shot at slipping into the A division if they can pass the KGB next week. The Latecomers can tie the Whizbangers for the final spot in the B division which would result in a tie breaker based on their head to head play this season.

The Fat Shafts took six points this week while the Southpaws earned five points which allowed the Fat Shafts to take a one point lead for first overall and puts their fate in their own hands heading into the final week next Wednesday night.

Also taking six points this week were the Rolling Stones, KGB, Hackers and Bogies. The Wedgers earned a single point. Andy Koetstra shot the low round of the week with an even par 27.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Kyle Wilkinson on hole #9 and Barry Defosse on hole #18. The 50/50 winner was Mark Adams.

Hot and Sticky Round

The heatwave continues to grip the area and the drought conditions are quite unreal this year but despite the humidity, we're still enjoying zero nights of missed golf due to the weather.
Norm Toyne nearly aces number 9.
I can't help but think we'll pay for this eventually.

My apologies to the Hackers and Dubbers. Last week I switched their scores for some reason but this weeks posted standings should be correct. I almost made it the whole season without  messing up.

With only two weeks of regular season rounds left, the standings are quite interesting for some teams. The Fat Shafts took six points this week while the Southpaws grabbed five points which locks them in a tie for first place with 99 points each. The Rolling Stones faltered and are no longer capable of challenging for the top spot. The KGB took six points and currently have the final spot in the "A" division but the Dubbers and Hackers could still make a move for that spot. The Whizbangers took six points to move into a "B" division spot but the Latecomers can still fight them for that position with two weeks to play.

The Hackers and Bogies took six points tonight while the Dubbers earned one point.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Andy Koetstra on hole #8 and Benny Brock on hole #17. The 50/50 winner was Rick Stuckless.

To those members taking part in the Club Championships this weekend, best of luck.

Battles Abound

There's nothing like some good competition to make things interesting as the season nears its completion and there's still plenty to be decided.

The Fat Shafts have moved to within one point of the Southpaws for first place overall after taking six points from the Hackers tonight. The Rolling Stones grabbed all six points in their match with the Southpaws to remain solidly in third place and are still within striking distance of the top spot.

The final position in the "A" flight is still up for grabs as the KGB and Hackers are tied with 65 points each. The Dubbers are also close with 61 points.
Meanwhile it could come down to the wire for the final position in the "B" flight as the Latecomers and Whizbangers are deadlocked for eighth place.

The Bogies, Whizbangers and Wedgers also grabbed six points in their matches tonight while the Dubbers took four and the Latecomers earned two points.

Kyle Wilkinson continued his strong play posting the low score of the night with a round of even par 27. Congrats to Ian MacDonald on a personal best as he shot a 29 for his lowest nine hole total ever on the course.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Dean on hole #7 and Kim Defosse on hole #16. Paul Reid was the 50/50 winner this week.

Down The Stretch We Come

The summer is flying by as we will soon head into August. That means we'll be down to the last weeks of regular season play before the Playoffs begin again and time is running out to earn the points needed to secure your place in each flight.

While the top three teams appear to have a lock on their "A" Flight positions, the KGB, Dubbers and Hackers can still battle it out for the last spot.
Rob Campbell takes aim at hole #16.
The Whizbangers also have time to move from their current "C" Flight position into the "B" Flight with some points down the home stretch.

The top three teams all swept their matches tonight with the Southpaws, Fat Shafts and Rolling Stones taking six points each. The Dubbers moved into a tie for fifth with the Hackers by taking five points along with the Latecomers. The Bogies earned four points while the Hackers took two points. Single points went to the Whizbangers and Fivesome.

Nick Vangemeren had the low round of the night shooting even par 27. The low team scores were shot by the Southpaws and Fat Shafts with 93 each. Vangemeren also took the Closet to the Pin prize on hole #6 while Jerry Powell had a terrific shot on hole #15. Tim Donaldson was this weeks 50/50 winner.

Can't Complain About The Weather

Nobody can complain that we haven't had good weather on Wednesday nights this season. Tonight was another warm one but luckily there was some relief with a nice breeze.

Overall the rounds seemed to be a bit on the high side but Kyle Wilkinson still managed to turn in an even par round of 27 for low score of the night.

Four of the six matches were clean sweeps as the Rolling Stones, Hackers, CCCP and  Southpaws took all six points. The Fat Shafts and KGB each grabbed four points while two points went to the Dubbers and Bogies.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Peter Hughes on hole #5 and Paul Reid on hole #14. The 50/50 winner was Denis Schick.

Stones Grab Low Gross

It was another muggy night for golf but this time the scores were much better all around than the previous week.

The Rolling Stones broke a three way tie for the Team Low Gross by turning in a low round of 84 to set the new mark to be reached.

There were several under 30 rounds posted with Andy Koetstra scoring lowest with a round of 25 which left him one shy of matching Kyle Wilkinson's league leading Individual low round of 24.

Four teams, the Rolling Stones, Southpaws, Fat Shafts and Whizbangers, took all six points up for grabs in their rounds. The Fivesome and Dubbers each took four points while the Hackers and CCCP left with a pair of points.

The Closest to the Pin prizes were won by Kevin Wadsworth on hole #4 while Len Bosma put his tee shot close on hole #13. This weeks 50/50 winner was Neil Nelson.

Toasty Night For Golf

On what might have been the hottest night of golf this season, the scores were not quite as on fire as the weather.
Don Muldoon tries to recover on hole #9.
Kyle Wilkinson continued his impressive play this season by posting a 25 which was by far the best round of the night .

We returned to normal points tonight which was fortunate for some teams. The first place Southpaws stumbled slightly allowing the Fat Shafts to move within five points of the lead. The Rolling Stones leapfrogged the KGB to sit in third by one point. The CCCP now have some company in the final spot after moving into a tie with the Fivesome.

The Fat Shafts, Rolling Stones and Bogies all swept their matches tonight to earn six points.
Pre-round chit chat at the clubhouse.
The Hackers, Dubbers and Whizbangers each earned four points while the Southpaws, KGB and CCCP took two points a piece.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Andy Koetstra on hole #3 (his third in five weeks) and Jim Turner on hole #12. Denis Schick was the 50/50 winner this week.

An Ace for Muldoon

I wasn't able to attend tonight's round but I was informed that Don Muldoon stepped up to the first hole and deposited his tee shot into the cup for what I believe is the first hole-in-one of the season for the league. I'm sure he had a wine or two following the round. Congratulations Don!

This was also the last round of double points for the year I believe which puts us half way through the season if you can believe it. Grabbing all 12 points in their matches were the Fat Shafts, Hackers, KGB, Rolling Stones and Southpaws. The CCCP took 8 points while four points went to the Latecomers.

The Team Low Gross lead is becoming a log jam as the Southpaws became the third team to shoot a low round of 88. Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night with a 26. Kyle Wilkinson continued his hot streak by earning his fourth Closest to the Pin prize in five weeks by putting one close on hole #11. Scott Reilly put his tee shot on hole #2 close for the honour on the front nine. This weeks 50/50 winner was Don St.Denis.

Big Night For Wilkinson

Some nights things just seem to go your way and tonight that was the case for Kyle Wilkinson. Kyle set the new mark for Individual Low Gross by shooting a three under par score of 24.

Wilkinson wasn't quite done there as he also grabbed the closest to the pin prize for the third time in four weeks by putting his shot tight on hole #1. Oh, and he also won the 50/50 prize this week and led his team to a round total of 88 to tie them with the Fat Shafts for the Team Low Gross.

This week also saw changes on the leaderboard as the Southpaws took full advantage of the double points night to take all 12 from the Fat Shafts and move back into first place. The Rolling Stones and Bogies also earned 12 points each. Elsewhere, the Dubbers and KGB took 10 points while the Latecomers grabbed eight. Taking four points were the Wedgers while the Fivesome and Hackers took a pair of points each.

Andy Koetstra picked up his second closest to the pin in three weeks putting his tee shot tight on hole #10. Next week will be the final round of double points.

Fat Shafts Shoot 88

On this first night of double points play, the opportunity for some teams to make a move in the standings was there for the taking. But it also meant you could fall in the standings as well. Tonight we saw a little of both.

KGB took advantage moving from fifth to third place leapfrogging a couple of teams.
Al Wilkinson fires a shot on #12.
The Hackers also moved up two places into fifth place. This meant some teams faltered as the Rolling Stones and Latecomers each fell two places to sixth and eighth spot. The Wedgers also moved up two places to ninth after doubling their season total in one night.

We have a new leader for the Team Low Gross as the Fat Shafts turned in a solid round of 88. The low individual rounds with a score of 28 were shot by Norm Toyne, Andy Koetstra and Paul Dicrescenzo.

Three teams swept their matches as the Hackers, Wedgers and KGB grabbed 12 points each.
Kyle Wilkinson intense on hole 14.
The Fat Shafts increased their lead slightly by taking 10 points. The Whizbangers and Southpaws each took 8 points while the Bogies and Latecomers snagged four. The Rolling Stones earned a pair of points for the night.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Marty McDonald on hole #9 while Kyle Wilkinson hit the pin on hole #18 for the honour. The 50/50 winner was Rob Campbell.

Brisk and Blustery Round

Mother Nature can have a sick sense of humour sometimes and tonight was one of those times. After dealing with hot and humid conditions recently, it was back to cool and windy golf weather tonight. I wish she’d pick a medium temperature and stick with it.

The strong winds made the round more challenging but that didn't stop some teams from turning in good performances. The standings continue to be rather sectioned off but that could change next week when we start our rounds of double points.

Five teams took all six points in their matches this evening. Sweeping their opponents were the Latecomers, Fat Shafts, KGB, Southpaws and Dubbers. The Hackers had a strong night taking five points from the Rolling Stones who earned a single point. The Fat Shafts came close to challenging for the Team Low Gross by shooting a 93 and were led by Andy Koetstra who had the low round for the night with a 29.

Andy also took home a Closest to the Pin prize with a good shot on hole #8 while Bobby Richardson had the honours on the back nine on hole #17. Bob Donaldson was this weeks 50/50 winner.

Ideal Conditions to Golf

Scores aside perhaps, I don't think anyone could complain about the conditions for golf tonight.
Dave Reid misses a lengthy putt on hole 13.
Sure, there were some bugs but it was an ideal temperature and a beautiful sunny night.

The standings continue to be crowded in sections after play this evening. The Southpaws moved to within one point of the front running Fat Shafts while the Rolling Stones stumbled a bit allowing the Dubbers to move into third place.

Just like last week, three teams swept their matches as the KGB, Hackers and Southpaws took six points. The Fat Shafts and Dubbers came close taking five points each. The Whizbangers had four points while the Rolling Stones grabbed two. The Bogies and Fivesome took one point each.

Tim Donaldson came up one stroke shy of grabbing a share of the Individual Low Gross score by shooting 27 tonight. The Southpaws as a team shot a 93 which also left them short of equaling the mark of 91 held by the Whizbangers. The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Dean on hole #7 and Kyle Wilkinson on hole #16. The 50/50 winner was Dave Powell.

A Change at the Top

It was a warm and sunny night for golf. The conditions would have been perfect had it not been for the black flies and mosquitoes swarming and sampling us.

The top teams continue to keep things crowded near the top of the standings. The Fat Shafts took advantage of some help by the Dubbers to move into sole possession of top spot for the first time in many years.

Three teams swept their matches as the Fat Shafts, Latecomers and Rolling Stones all took six points. The Bogies came close with five and the Fivesome and Southpaws each earned four points. Taking two points each were the Whizbangers and the Dubbers while CCCP grabbed a single point.

Rick Dean tied his leading Individual Low Gross score by shooting another 26 tonight. I was also informed that Jim Conley had an impressive recovery on hole 17. After putting his tee shot in the pond he proceeded to hit from the red blocks and holed out for par. The Closest to the Pin winners were Dave Reid on hole #6 and Josh McDonald on hole #15. The 50/50 winner was Don Muldoon.

Fat Shafts Grab Share of Lead

The top of the standings continues to be crowded but for the first time in a while more than one team shares the top spot. The Fat Shafts, led by Stephen Westlake's low round of 28 for the night, took six points from the Hackers and share first place with the Southpaws with 26 points each.

Other teams sweeping their matches to earn six points included CCCP and the Bogies. The Southpaws, Dubbers and KGB each took four points while the Latecomers, Rolling Stones and Whizbangers earned two points each.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Scott Reilly on hole #5 and Denis Schick on hole #14. The 50/50 winner was Mark Lafee.

We also want to congratulate Tom and Alida on the birth of their newest Granddaughter.

Rough Night For Scoring

It's hard to say why the scores were so high tonight when it was such a perfect evening for golf but every team struggled to score well.
Dave Powell tees off on Hole #7.
I don't recall another night in my years in the league where no team scored under 100. The lowest team gross was turned in by the Southpaws with a 102.

As far as the nights match ups were concerned, only the Fat Shafts, Dubbers and Latecomers took all six points. The Rolling Stones took five points while the Hackers and Southpaws each grabbed four points.
Lyle Williams shows his form on the 2nd hole.
Earning two points were the Bogies and KGB while the Wedgers took a single point.

Not everyone struggled as the low score for the night was turned in by Kyle Wilkinson with a 28. The Closest to the Pin winners were Coady MacGillvary on hole #4 and Kyle Wilkinson on hole #13. The 50/50 winner was Peter Hughes.

Rick Dean Was Dialed In Tonight

After a slow start for many to the season, the cobwebs are starting to disappear and the lower scores are being posted. Rick Dean was turned in the lowest individual round of the young season tonight by shooting a one under par round of 26. Paul Reid also had an impressive even par round of 27 this evening as well.

It was almost another week of clean sweeps in the matches with the Fivesome, Southpaws, KGB, Rolling Stones and Wedgers all taking six points. The Fat Shafts earned four points while the Dubbers took two.

The Closest to the Pin winners tonight were Symen Korver on hole #3 with a very tight shot while Tyler Donaldson also put his tee shot close on hole #12. The 50/50 winner was Randy Conley.

A clerical error week one resulted in a missed low team score and the Team Low Gross being reported erroneously. The current leaders in this category are the Whizbangers with a score of 91. Sorry for the confusion.

A Night of Sweeps

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am blaming the colder weather for my less than impressive play during tonight's round of golf.
Andy Koetstra leaves his par putt on 12 just short.
Judging by some of the other scores I saw, I wasn't the only one affected. We have to blame something don't we?

It was feast or famine with the matches tonight as all six of them were clean sweeps. The Hackers, Dubbers, Whizbangers, Southpaws, Rolling Stones and Fat Shafts all took six points.

The low score for the night was turned in by Peter Hughes with a 29. The Southpaws took over the Team Low Gross with a 94, one shot better than the mark set last week by the Fat Shafts.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Jim Conley on hole #2 and Rick Dean on hole #11. The 50/50 winner was Jim Lidster.

Good Start to the Season

There was no rain or snow, so right off the bat we started men's league with weather we couldn't complain about.
Lyle Williams tees off on 16.
Add to that the fact there were no bugs and the course was dry and we couldn't have asked for a better first night of league play.

It was nice to see some new faces out tonight and good to see the familiar ones as well after a long winter.

The season began with some impressive play including Denis Schick who set the bar for Individual Low Gross by turning in an impressive even par score of 27. The Closest to the Pin winners were Eric Korver on hole #1 while Tim Donaldson stuck his tee shot close on hole #10. Donaldson was also the years first winner of the 50/50.

In team play, the Whizbangers and Southpaws took all six points in their matches while the Dubbers grabbed five. The Fivesome, Wedgers and Fat Shafts each took four points. The Latecomers, Bogies and Rolling Stones earned two points each while a single point went to the KGB.

The Team Low Gross was turned in by the Fat Shafts with a 95.

We Have A Start Date

I have been informed that if the weather finally cooperates we will start the league on Wednesday April 20th at 6pm.

Lets keep our fingers crossed that we get some warmer weather by then and can get another season underway.

Even with all of our rust from the long winter, I hope nobody pulls an Ernie Els and six putts any greens that night.

See you then!

Are You Getting The Itch?

With the mild winter behind us and the arrival of April, it won't be long before we can clean off the clubs and get back out on the course.

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable time off from our favourite sport the last six months or so.

No word yet on a possible start date for the league but as soon as I know of a confirmed date I'll be sure to post it here.

Looking forward to seeing everyone back on the links again before too long.
