Crunch Time

With only two more regular season weeks left after tonight's round, the opportunities to make a move for a playoff position are running out quickly.

The Southpaws made progress tonight by grabbing six points to slide past CCCP by one point and sit in fourth place and the last spot in the "A" flight. Only three points separate sixth place and fourth and the next two weeks will decide the "A" and "B" flight combatants.
Dave Pemberton strikes the ball on 18.
The Fivesome sit in ninth and are six points away from moving into the top eight. Meanwhile, the battle for first overall got a bit tighter as the Fat Shafts were handed six points by the absent Rolling Stones while the KGB took only four points to hold a three point cushion for first.

Taking six points tonight were the Southpaws, Dubbers, Whizbangers and Fat Shafts. The Fivesome and KGB earned four points while two points each went to CCCP and Wedgers.

The closest to the pin winners were Jim Conley on hole #7 and Rick Dean on hole #16. Randy Grills was the 50/50 winner this week.

Time To Make Moves

Believe it or not, the end of the season is quickly approaching and time is running out for teams to make their moves to get to the playoff positions they hope to be in at the end.
Eric Korver fires his tee shot on #17 and lands on the green.
The middle of the pack is still relatively close and a lot can change in the weeks ahead.

Scoring continues to be tough this season as only four teams, the KGB, Fat Shafts, Southpaws and Dubbers were able to shoot sub-100 rounds as a team tonight.

The KGB, Fat Shafts and Whizbangers all took six points in their rounds for the evening. Five points were earned by the Dubbers and Southpaws while the Hackers grabbed four points. The CCCP took two points while single points went to the Bogies and Wedgers.

The low score for the evening was turned in by Tim Donaldson with an even par round of 27. The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Turtle on hole #5 and Denis Schick on hole #14. Benny Brock was the 50/50 winner.

Hughes Aces Sixteen

It was a race to beat the weather tonight but for most of us it was a race we lost as we had to finish the last couple of holes in the rain. Even the mosquitoes were taking cover under the umbrellas.

Congratulations to Peter Hughes who didn't let the threat of rain keep him from getting a hole-in-one.
Peter Hughes all smiles after getting a hole-in-one.
Peter used a Gap Wedge to ace the 108 yard sixteenth hole.

The battle for first overall continues to tighten as the Fat Shafts hold a slim one point lead over the surging  KGB squad. The Fat Shafts took five points tonight while the KGB swept all six points in their match against the Whizbangers.

The idea of possibly getting damp kept several golfers away and that led to some forfeits. Both the Southpaws and CCCP were given six points each as the Rolling Stones and Wedgers failed to have enough players. The Dubbers also earned six points while the Bogies took four. The Fivesome managed two points while the Hackers posted a single point.

The low rounds of the evening were turned in by Tim Donaldson and Rick Dean who both shot a 29. Donaldson also earned Closest to the Pin honours on hole #3 while Eric Mofina stuck his tee shot close on hole #12. Thom Christmann was the 50/50 winner this week.

Team Low Gross Tie

After seeing teams struggle to post low scores to start the season, tonight things improved a great deal with several posting totals in the 90's.
Jim Conley takes aim at hole #12.
In the process, two teams posted scores of 92 as both the Fat Shafts and KGB are tied for the team low gross.

It's also getting crowded in the race for individual low gross as Tim Donaldson shot even par 27 to move into a tie with Kyle Wilkinson and Rick Dean. Other low scores tonight included a 28 by Steve Westlake and 29's by both Jerry Powell and Denis Schick.

It was a night of sweeps in the matches as the Fivesome, Southpaws, KGB, Rolling Stones, Fat Shafts and Wedgers all took six points.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Jimmy Rodgers on hole #1 and Jim Turner on hole #10. Nick Defosse was the 50/50 winner this week.

Shutouts Galore

We were blessed with another beautiful night for golf. The sun was shining, the shorts were on for some but we won't talk about the pesky mosquitoes.

The perfect conditions helped many to post some very impressive scores.
Lyle Williams chips on Hole #3 after his layup.
Both Rick Dean and Kyle Wilkinson shot even par 27 and now share the Individual Low Gross lead.

It was all or nothing when it came time to add up the scores for the night. All six matches were sweeps as the Fat Shafts, Whizbangers, KGB, CCCP, Rolling Stones and Southpaws took all six points up for grabs

For the second week in a row Tom St.Denis took a Closest to the Pin prize by sticking it tight on hole #16. Kevin Wadsworth's first shot of the night on hole #7 finished just over a foot away to take the honour on the front nine. Dave Horner was the 50/50 winner this week.

Nobody's Perfect

After only two weeks, no teams have a perfect start by sweeping all of their points. If this continues it could make for a very interesting season.

There were four teams that swept their matches this evening as the KGB, Southpaws, Bogies and Whizbangers all took six points.
Kim Defosse hit the ninth green with this tee shot.
The Wedgers and Latecomers came close earning five points each while the Fat Shafts and Hackers squeaked out single points for the night.

Rick Dean set the new low mark to beat for Individual Low Gross by shooting a 28. The Wedgers equalled the round by the KGB last week by shooting a 94 to grab a share of the Team Low Gross lead.

The closest to the pin winners were Kyle Wilkinson on hole #2 and Jordan Mercer on hole #11. The 50/50 winner was Thom Christmann.

Just a reminder to make sure when entering the closest to the pin pool that you add the correct amount.

Battles Abound

There's nothing like some good competition to make things interesting as the season nears its completion and there's still plenty to be decided.

The Fat Shafts have moved to within one point of the Southpaws for first place overall after taking six points from the Hackers tonight. The Rolling Stones grabbed all six points in their match with the Southpaws to remain solidly in third place and are still within striking distance of the top spot.

The final position in the "A" flight is still up for grabs as the KGB and Hackers are tied with 65 points each. The Dubbers are also close with 61 points.
Meanwhile it could come down to the wire for the final position in the "B" flight as the Latecomers and Whizbangers are deadlocked for eighth place.

The Bogies, Whizbangers and Wedgers also grabbed six points in their matches tonight while the Dubbers took four and the Latecomers earned two points.

Kyle Wilkinson continued his strong play posting the low score of the night with a round of even par 27. Congrats to Ian MacDonald on a personal best as he shot a 29 for his lowest nine hole total ever on the course.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Dean on hole #7 and Kim Defosse on hole #16. Paul Reid was the 50/50 winner this week.

Ideal Conditions to Golf

Scores aside perhaps, I don't think anyone could complain about the conditions for golf tonight.
Dave Reid misses a lengthy putt on hole 13.
Sure, there were some bugs but it was an ideal temperature and a beautiful sunny night.

The standings continue to be crowded in sections after play this evening. The Southpaws moved to within one point of the front running Fat Shafts while the Rolling Stones stumbled a bit allowing the Dubbers to move into third place.

Just like last week, three teams swept their matches as the KGB, Hackers and Southpaws took six points. The Fat Shafts and Dubbers came close taking five points each. The Whizbangers had four points while the Rolling Stones grabbed two. The Bogies and Fivesome took one point each.

Tim Donaldson came up one stroke shy of grabbing a share of the Individual Low Gross score by shooting 27 tonight. The Southpaws as a team shot a 93 which also left them short of equaling the mark of 91 held by the Whizbangers. The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Dean on hole #7 and Kyle Wilkinson on hole #16. The 50/50 winner was Dave Powell.

A Change at the Top

It was a warm and sunny night for golf. The conditions would have been perfect had it not been for the black flies and mosquitoes swarming and sampling us.

The top teams continue to keep things crowded near the top of the standings. The Fat Shafts took advantage of some help by the Dubbers to move into sole possession of top spot for the first time in many years.

Three teams swept their matches as the Fat Shafts, Latecomers and Rolling Stones all took six points. The Bogies came close with five and the Fivesome and Southpaws each earned four points. Taking two points each were the Whizbangers and the Dubbers while CCCP grabbed a single point.

Rick Dean tied his leading Individual Low Gross score by shooting another 26 tonight. I was also informed that Jim Conley had an impressive recovery on hole 17. After putting his tee shot in the pond he proceeded to hit from the red blocks and holed out for par. The Closest to the Pin winners were Dave Reid on hole #6 and Josh McDonald on hole #15. The 50/50 winner was Don Muldoon.

Rick Dean Was Dialed In Tonight

After a slow start for many to the season, the cobwebs are starting to disappear and the lower scores are being posted. Rick Dean was turned in the lowest individual round of the young season tonight by shooting a one under par round of 26. Paul Reid also had an impressive even par round of 27 this evening as well.

It was almost another week of clean sweeps in the matches with the Fivesome, Southpaws, KGB, Rolling Stones and Wedgers all taking six points. The Fat Shafts earned four points while the Dubbers took two.

The Closest to the Pin winners tonight were Symen Korver on hole #3 with a very tight shot while Tyler Donaldson also put his tee shot close on hole #12. The 50/50 winner was Randy Conley.

A clerical error week one resulted in a missed low team score and the Team Low Gross being reported erroneously. The current leaders in this category are the Whizbangers with a score of 91. Sorry for the confusion.

A Night of Sweeps

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am blaming the colder weather for my less than impressive play during tonight's round of golf.
Andy Koetstra leaves his par putt on 12 just short.
Judging by some of the other scores I saw, I wasn't the only one affected. We have to blame something don't we?

It was feast or famine with the matches tonight as all six of them were clean sweeps. The Hackers, Dubbers, Whizbangers, Southpaws, Rolling Stones and Fat Shafts all took six points.

The low score for the night was turned in by Peter Hughes with a 29. The Southpaws took over the Team Low Gross with a 94, one shot better than the mark set last week by the Fat Shafts.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Jim Conley on hole #2 and Rick Dean on hole #11. The 50/50 winner was Jim Lidster.

2015 Playoffs - First Nine

It was a hot night on the old links as we kicked off the 2015 league playoffs and for one particular golfer, the night was even warmer.

Norm Toyne helped his Wedgers team to a lead in the “B” Division by shooting an impressive three under par round of 24. That score combined with the rest of the team produced the low total of the night with an 89. The KGB sit seven shots back with a 96. The Fivesome turned in a 99 while the Whizbangers shot 104.

In the “A” Division the scores were more average which will keep things relatively tight heading into round two next Wednesday. The Southpaws and Rolling Stones each posted scores of 94 while the Dubbers shot 97. The Fat Shafts had a less than impressive start but still remain within nine strokes of the lead after posting a 103.

Over on the “C” Division, the Bogies set the high mark by turning in the groups only sub 100 round by shooting a team total of 99. That score gives them a one stroke lead over the CCCP who played to a total of 100. The Latecomers and Hackers also had strong nights and sit six shots out of first after shooting 105 each.

There were eight Closest to the Pin holes to shoot for this evening with four on the front and four on the back nine. The winners were:

Hole #1: Paul Dicrescenzo
Hole #2: Randy Conley

Hole #3: Rick Dean
Hole #4: Jim Turner

Hole #11: Al Wilkinson
Hole #17: Ralph Lampert
Hole #18: Mark Kennedy

Please note that the start time for the final 18 holes on September 12th has been changed to 2:30pm. This is 30 minutes earlier than normal. See you next Wednesday night.

Week One Finally Happens

After what seemed like the winter that would never end, the league finally saw the first swings of the new season. For some of us, it was a lot of swings.

A chilly night and a stiff breeze made for less than favourable conditions but the course was in good shape and there was no snow to be found so how could anyone really complain?

My apologies for not getting the results up sooner but I had to work at 9pm Wednesday night and some folks were tardy in entering their scores before I had to leave. But I have the results from night one now. I would appreciate it if you guys could tally the scores as soon as you can get in if at all possible.

Five teams swept all six points as the KGB, Dubbers, Whizbangers, CCCP and Southpaws all won their matches. Meanwhile the Fat Shafts and Bogies battled to a split taking three points each.

Rick Dean grabbed the Closest to the Pin prize on Hole #1 while Tim Donaldson was the sharpest on the back nine on Hole #10. The 50/50 was won by Dave Reid.

Setting the standard to beat for Individual Low Gross was Tim Donaldson shooting a 28 and the Team Low Gross was turned in by the Southpaws with a 95.

Here are a few photos I snapped on night one. You can click on them to see them bigger. See you next week.

Wilkinson Starts With A Bang

Kyle Wilkinson stepped up to the tee on hole #17, his starting hole for the night, and promptly fired a dart and sank his third career hole-in-one. This makes three weeks in a row that someone has walked away with an ace. Kyle used his 56 degree wedge on the 134 yard hole. Congratulations Kyle!

Kyle Wilkinson all smiles after his hole-in-one.
With only one week remaining before the start of playoffs there's still plenty of room for some changes to take place in the standings. With only one point separating the Dubbers and Fat Shafts for fourth place, the last spot in the "A" division is still in question. The Wedgers are six points back of the Dubbers for fourth and could still be a factor depending on the tie-breaker.

The "C" flight teams are already decided however the seeding there is yet to be determined.

The only thing for certain is that the Southpaws will be the regular season champs with 114 points and a 15 point cushion over the Rolling Stones heading to the final week of play.

The Southpaws missed a chance to add to their impressive total tonight as the Fat Shafts narrowly took all six points up for grabs in their match. Other teams taking six points this evening were the Latecomers, Whizbangers and Rolling Stones. The KGB took five points, the Fivesome earned four, the Dubbers took two while a single point went to the Hackers.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Dean on hole #9 and Peter Hughes on #18. The 50/50 winner was Nick Vangemeren.

Cold Weather Leads To High Scores

I can't say for sure if the reason for so many of us posted higher than normal scores was just because we were that bad tonight or if the bone-chilling and breezy weather conditions were to blame. That's what I'm going with. But on the bright side, at least it was dry.

Some teams still managed to sneak away with some points despite the larger team totals. The Fat Shafts, Dubbers, KGB, Wedgers and Southpaws all took six points while the Fivesome managed to earn four points over the Bogies who grabbed the other two points.

The Closest to the Pin winners this week were Rick Dean on Hole #2 and Mark Kennedy on Hole #11. Lyle Williams won the 50/50 draw.

Lets hope for some warmer weather next week.

No Rain But Lots Of Heat

I promise I won't complain about the rain anymore because tonight I would have welcomed a nice cold soaking instead of the high humidity we had to endure. With temperatures feeling like 39 Celsius or 102 Fahrenheit at the time we teed off, it was by far the hottest night we've had this season.

The weather wasn't he only thing hot tonight as Andy Koetstra of the Fat Shafts shot a 26 which moved him into a tie for Individual Low Gross. Koetstra had a bit of luck on his side as he was also the evening's 50/50 winner.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Peter Hughes on #5 and Rick Dean on #14.

Taking all six points in their matches were the CCCP, Hackers and KGB. Southpaws and Rolling Stones each took 5, Dubbers 4, Fat Shafts 2 and earning single points were the Whizbangers and Latecomers.

We also had good news that Harry Morris' surgery went well last week and he is feeling much better. We hope to see him out again in the near future.

Maybe June Will Be Nicer

It's starting to get a little old isn't it? Once again tonight we found ourselves golfing under cloudy skies and although we didn't get soaked, it did rain just enough to remind us it must be Wednesday night. At least the bugs weren't too bad.

The Dubbers managed to take all six points from the Bogies who had yet to give up a single point this season. Also taking six points were the Hackers, Southpaws and KGB. The Fat Shafts earned five points, Rolling Stones 4, Whizbangers 2 and the Fivesome one.

Rick Dean had the low round of the night shooting even par which was good enough to move him into a tie with Norm Toyne for the Individual Low Gross.

Dean also grabbed the Closest to the Pin honours on hole #6 while Tim Donaldson was closest on hole #15. Bob Donaldson was the 50/50 winner.

That's More Like It

For those of you who didn't recognize it, that bright yellow thing in the sky was the sun. I know, I was shocked to see it as well as it finally arrived on a Wednesday night. Some of you may have also seen the black flies and the fox on the course as well.

Four teams swept their matches tonight as the Hackers, Wedgers, Dubbers and Bogies took all six points. The Rolling Stones earned five, the Whizbangers 4, KGB two and the Southpaws grabbed a single point.

Norm Toyne shot par to grab sole possession of the Individual Low Gross at 27. Norm also earned the Closest to the Pin nod on hole #4 while Rick Dean took the honours on hole #13. Barry Defosse was this weeks 50/50 winner.

Wet Start To Season

The weather was wet on Wednesday night but at least it wasn't white as well as we kicked off the league for another year.

The dampness kept some away but they missed out on what was actually an enjoyable night for golf as the rain was mostly light and had little effect on the play.

Five teams got off to a strong start taking six points each.

The low scorers for the night were Dennis Schick and Rick Dean, each shooting a 29.

Kyle Wilkinson had an impressive shot on hole #1 to earn the Closest to the Pin honours while Dave Walker zeroed in on hole #10. Mark Kennedy was the first 50/50 winner of the season.
