Blues Prove Tough

Judging by the scores posted tonight, it seems the long blue tees combined with some breezy conditions, made for some less than stellar shooting tonight for many.
Mark Lafee launches his ball towards the 14th green.
Even your humble blog host posted an epic score of which we will never speak of again.

By no means can we blame those scores on the course conditions as the greens were quick and looking in great shape. Hats off to Tom and the crew for their hard work during this damp Spring. But Summer is finally here and hopefully that will bring more sunshine and warmer temps.

In the evenings matches, the Fivesome, CCCP, Wedgers and Bogies all took six points. The Southpaws and KGB grabbed four each while the Latecomers and Fat Shafts managed two points.

The Closest to the Pin winners this week were Marsh Ferguson on hole #9 and Kevin Wadsworth on hole #18. Lyle Williams was this weeks 50/50 winner.

Shutouts Galore

We were blessed with another beautiful night for golf. The sun was shining, the shorts were on for some but we won't talk about the pesky mosquitoes.

The perfect conditions helped many to post some very impressive scores.
Lyle Williams chips on Hole #3 after his layup.
Both Rick Dean and Kyle Wilkinson shot even par 27 and now share the Individual Low Gross lead.

It was all or nothing when it came time to add up the scores for the night. All six matches were sweeps as the Fat Shafts, Whizbangers, KGB, CCCP, Rolling Stones and Southpaws took all six points up for grabs

For the second week in a row Tom St.Denis took a Closest to the Pin prize by sticking it tight on hole #16. Kevin Wadsworth's first shot of the night on hole #7 finished just over a foot away to take the honour on the front nine. Dave Horner was the 50/50 winner this week.

I Didn't Mean To Bug Ya

After all of the wet weather we've been getting I don't think anyone was surprised by the number of flying annoyances we had to deal with tonight. However, judging by some of the scores, they didn't appear to bother everyone.

All but two matches this evening were very tight for points. Only the Fat Shafts and CCCP swept all six points. The Southpaws and Hackers  earned five points while the Latecomers and Wedgers each took four points.
Steve Westlake takes aim at hole #8.
Two points went to the Fivesome and Whizbangers while single points were earned by the Bogies and Dubbers.

Once again this week, team scoring was on the high side as only the Fat Shafts and Southpaws posted sub-100 totals of 98.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Jim Bruce on hole #5 and Kevin Wadsworth on hole #14. Jordan Mercer was the 50/50 winner this week.

2016 Playoffs - Round One

Scattered showers around the area gave way to a warm and clear evening as the playoffs got underway tonight.

In the "A" Flight, the Southpaws shot the low round of the night, posting an impressive 85 and hold a four stroke advantage after round one. Andy Koetstra had the low round of the evening shooting a 25 to lead the Fat Shafts to the only other sub 90 round as they scored an 89.
Andy Koetstra starts his round on hole #1.
The Rolling Stones are seven shots off the pace with a 92 while the KGB posted a round of 97.

In the "B" Flight, just one stroke separates the Dubbers and Whizbangers. Tom St.Denis turned in a round of 31 to help his team to a total of 97 while the Whizbangers scored a 98. The Bogies are only six strokes back after putting up a 103 while the Hackers struggled and shot 113.

Fat Shafts Regular Season Champs

After clinching the regular season the last four years, the Southpaws will have to settle for second place as the Fat Shafts claimed their first league title.

It came down to the final night.
Lyle Williams launches his shot towards the 16th green.
The Fat Shafts held a slim one point lead heading into the final round and after both teams took all six points in their matches, the Fat Shafts finished the season with a total of 111 points to the Southpaws 110.

The Latecomers also took six points while the KGB and Dubbers each earned four points. Stones Grab Low Gross

It was another muggy night for golf but this time the scores were much better all around than the previous week.

The Rolling Stones broke a three way tie for the Team Low Gross by turning in a low round of 84 to set the new mark to be reached.

There were several under 30 rounds posted with Andy Koetstra scoring lowest with a round of 25 which left him one shy of matching Kyle Wilkinson's league leading Individual low round of 24.

Four teams, the Rolling Stones, Southpaws, Fat Shafts and Whizbangers, took all six points up for grabs in their rounds. The Fivesome and Dubbers each took four points while the Hackers and CCCP left with a pair of points.

The Closest to the Pin prizes were won by Kevin Wadsworth on hole #4 while Len Bosma put his tee shot close on hole #13. This weeks 50/50 winner was Neil Nelson.

2015 Playoffs - Second Nine

After a scorcher of a round last week, I don’t think anyone was complaining about the temperatures we were blessed with for week two of the playoffs and the second nine holes from the white tees.

Andy Koetstra of the Fat Shafts posted the low round for the evening by shooting a 26.

In the “A” Division, as most expected, it remains a two team race for the title after 18 holes. The Southpaws hold a slim one stroke lead over the Rolling Stones after shooting an 89 tonight and a total of 183. The Stones and Fat Shafts both shot 90 while the Dubbers posted a 101.The Stones have a total of 184 while the Fat Shafts jumped into third, 10 shots off the pace with an 18 hole score of 193. The Dubbers are five strokes back in fourth with 198.

Barring a major collapse on Saturday, the Wedgers appear poised for an easy victory in the “B” Division. Their 90 for the evening leaves them with an 18 hole total of 179, best among all teams and 14 strokes ahead of the KGB with 193 after they played to a 97 tonight. The Whizbangers turned in a round of 95 to remain within six strokes of second place. The Fivesome, who shot 104, dropped to fourth place with a total of 203.

Over on the “C” flight, the Bogies continue to lead after 18 holes. They shot 97 this evening and have a team total of 196 heading into the final day. The Hackers, who shot 101, are within striking distance just 10 strokes behind. The CCCP had the high total for the night shooting 108 which dropped them into third place with a total of 208. Meanwhile the Latecomers shot a 106 and fell to fourth with a total of 211.

There were eight more Closest to the Pin holes to shoot for this evening with four on the front and four on the back nine. The winners were:

Hole #5: Nick Vangemeren
Hole #6: Andy Koetstra
Hole #12: Frank Cusson
Hole #13: Kevin Wadsworth

Once again, just a reminder that the final 18 holes are this coming Saturday September 12th and the start time is 2:30pm.

That's More Like It

After suffering through sweltering heat last Wednesday night, the change in temperature was welcomed by all of us as the humidity has left us for a while. This made for a much more comfortable round of golf.

With only four more weeks of regular season play remaining, the playoff positioning is becoming more clear and the chance for teams to make moves is quickly running out.

Four teams swept all six points in their matches tonight. They included the Whizbangers, Southpaws, Dubbers and Rolling Stones. The KGB grabbed five points while the Wedgers earned four points. The Latecomers took two points while a single point went to the Hackers.

Nick Vangemeren had the low round of the night with a 28. Kevin Wadsworth was this weeks 50/50 winner while the Closest to the Pin winners were Michael Walker on Hole #5 and Paul Dicrescenzo on the 15th hole.

Toyne Tears It Up

Steve Powell adds up his match totals for the night.
There was no questioning who had the hot clubs tonight. Norm Toyne of the Wedgers became the new Individual Low Gross Leader by turning in a tremendous 2-under par round of 25. Among his pars, Toyne also had three birdies and even had a bogey on the final hole to shoot his impressive round.

Not surprisingly, the Wedgers took all six points in their match. Also sweeping their matches were the Fat Shafts, Whizbangers, Southpaws and Latecomers. The Dubbers took five points from the Rolling Stones who earned a single point.

The Closest to the Pin winners for the night were Kevin Wadsworth on hole #4 and Coady McGillvary on hole #13. Rick Turtle was this weeks 50/50 winner.

Kovanen Aces Third Hole

The hot and muggy conditions were exactly what the right conditions for Don Kovanen tonight as he picked up a hole-in-one. Don used a five iron on the 130 yard third hole to snag his ace. Congratulations Don!

Don Kovanen aced hole #3 tonight.
Dennis Schick nearly aced the 7th hole but had to settle for the Closest to the Pin prize on the front nine. Kevin Wadsworth grabbed his second closest to the pin prize in back to back weeks sticking it close on hole #16. The weeks 50/50 winner was Marco Leone.

As we creep closer to the end of the regular season and teams jockey for division rankings for the playoffs every point becomes more important. Four teams took all six points in their matches with the Rolling Stones, KGB, Southpaws and Latecomers increasing their totals. The Whizbangers earned five points while the Dubbers managed four. The Wedgers earned two points and the Fat Shafts squeaked out a single tally on the night.

Points-a-plenty Tonight

The dry and muggy conditions continued tonight but there were a few raindrops to give us hope that the current drought we've been going through might see some relief. But it didn't happen while we were playing and that's always a good thing.

There points were spread around this evening as nine out of the 12 teams managed to increase their totals.

Only three teams managed to take all of the points up for grabs in their matches as the Fat Shafts, KGB and Southpaws each earned six points. The points by the Southpaws moves them past the century mark with 102pts. The CCCP and Dubbers grabbed five points and four points went to the Whizbangers. The Rolling Stones took two points while the Hackers and Bogies earned one point a piece.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Kevin Wadsworth on hole #6 while Ryan Cuculuzzi was tight on hole #15. Paul Scobie was this weeks 50/50 winner.

Defosse Celebrates Birthday In Style

On the night of his 55th birthday, Kim Defosse proved that getting older only improves your game as he shot a one-under 26 to tie Norm Toyne for the Individual Low Gross.

As if that wasn't good enough, Defosse also grabbed some extra cash by sticking his tee shot close on hole #8 to win the Closest to the Pin. Al Wilkinson had the most accurate shot on the back nine as he stuck it closest on hole #17. The 50/50 winner this week was Kevin Wadsworth.

Ten out of 12 teams managed to earn points this evening with the Bogies and Southpaws each taking all six in their matches. The Rolling Stones earned five points. The Whizbangers, Latecomers and KGB grabbed four each. The Hackers and CCCP improved their totals by two points while the Dubbers managed a single point.

Just a reminder that next Wednesday is our first week of playing 18 holes so be prepared to stay a little later than normal.

June Brings A Better Night

The month of May is behind us and with any luck, so is the wet, cool and miserable weather. Tonight was by far the nicest night for golf yet...despite the breezy conditions. Actually, the wind likely helped to keep the bugs down and that's always a good thing.

Four teams took all six points up for grabs in their matches this evening. The Rolling Stones, Southpaws, Latecomers and Whizbangers swept their matches. The KGB took five, the Wedgers four, the Dubbers two and a single point went to the Fivesome.

Andy Koetstra earned the Closest to the Pin prize on hole #7 while Steve Westlake was closest on hole #16. Kevin Wadsworth won the 50/50.

Reminder: We play 18 holes next week.

Wedgers Go Low

Steve Westlake shot a 25 to move into a tie for Individual Low Gross while at the same time helping his team to post what is likely a new record Low Team Gross for our league. The Wedgers combined their scores to shoot a 79.

Three teams swept all 12 points up for grabs as the Wedgers, KGB and Fat Shafts had a good night. The Southpaws lead shrunk just a bit as they managed 10 points versus the CCCP.

Jimmy Rogers had a good night winning the 50/50 and he also grabbed the cash for Closest to the Pin on hole #11. Kevin Wadsworth's nice shot held for closest on #2.

Next week we return to 9 holes and I believe we'll be playing the blue tees for the first time in a while.

Have a Happy Canada Day guys!

No Bugs and Lots of Birdies

I don't think anyone could complain about the conditions that greeted us for week number two of league play. Mainly clear skies, no bugs and some excellent scores.

Drew Donovan led the way by posting a 29 on his first night in the league which was also good enough to take over the Individual Low Gross lead. The KGB had a strong night as a team shooting 93 which allowed them to claim the low score for Team Low Gross.

Four teams swept all of the points in their respective matches as the CCCP, KGB, Fat Shafts and Wedgers took all six points up for grabs.

Tim Donaldson won the Closest to the Pin on hole #2 while Kevin Wadsworth took the back nine honours with a close shot on #11. Peter Hughes was this weeks 50/50 winner.

Aces-O-Plenty Lately

For the last two weeks the 16th hole has been more generous than usual as two golfers found the cup with their tee shots.

Last week Dan Jess of the Fat Shafts helped propel his team to take over the Team Low Gross (87) with his first Hole-in-One on 16. This week Kevin Wadsworth from the KGB followed up winning the Closest to the Pin prize on hole 15 with his ace on 16. Congratulations to both Dan and Wally.

With just five weeks remaining in the regular season the playoff picture is starting to become clearer and if teams are looking to make a move they'll need to do it sooner rather than later.

The other Closest to the Pin winner this week was Bill Hewson on Hole 6. The 50/50 winner was Glen Lonergan.
