2017 Playoffs - Round Two

What a difference one round made for several teams tonight as moves were made to set up an interesting final round on Saturday. Before we go any further, a reminder that the new start time for the final round of 18 holes will be 2:00pm, an hour earlier than previous years.

We must also congratulate Al Wilkinson who aced the 5th hole this evening.
Andy, Tom and Kory wait for Lyle to putt on 13.
Not surprisingly his hole-in-one also stood up for the closest to the pin on that hole. Well done Al.

In the "A" Flight the Southpaws took advantage of some mistakes made by their opponents to move up to first place with a two stroke lead over the KGB. The Fat Shafts are just five strokes off the pace while the Dubbers sit 13 strokes behind.

Over in the "B" Flight the Rolling Stones have a total of 198 and appear to be on cruise control. Unless they fail to show up on Saturday they should be able to hold their 19 stroke lead over the Fivesome. The Whizbangers are 20 off the pace while the CCCP need to make up a 21 stroke deficit on the weekend.

The battle for "C" Flight is a bit tighter as the Hackers sit atop the standings with a 208 total. That puts them four strokes ahead of the Wedgers and seven strokes up on the Latecomers. Sitting 15 strokes back are the Bogies.

Their were two golfers who shared the low round for the night as Al Wilkinson and Tim Donaldson both shot one over par 28. The rest of the closest to the pin winners were Kyle Wilkinson on holes 6 and 8. Al Wilkinson had another on hole 7. On the back nine the winners were Jim Conley, Andy Koetstra, Tom St.Denis and Don Muldoon.

Once again a reminder that the final round will take place on Saturday at 2:00pm with the meal and party to follow. I'm sure Steve Westlake and Kim Defosse will have the putting contest going as well. See you there and please don't drink and drive.

2017 Playoffs - Round One

Round one of the playoffs is in the books and some teams played well while others struggled but after only nine holes nobody is out of it.

In the "A" Flight the KGB and Fat Shafts share the lead having both shot 95. The Southpaws are only four shots back with a 99 while the Dubbers are seven shots off the lead after scoring a 102.

The "B" Flight is a bit more open as the Rolling Stones shot 103 and have a five stroke lead over the CCCP who put up a 108.
Steve Powell takes aim at Hole #8.
The Whizbangers sit seven shots back after shooting a 110 while a score of 114 leaves the Fivesome 11 strokes off the lead.

The Latecomers have the early lead in the "C" Flight after shooting 100 on the night. Seven shots back in second are the Wedgers who posted a 107 and a shot behind them are the Hackers who scored a 108. The Bogies had an off night posting a 115 but are still within striking distance.

The low score of the night was turned in by Kyle Wilkinson with an even par 27. Several others posted sub-30 rounds for the night.

The closest to the pin winners were Tim Donaldson, Paul Reid, Tyler Donaldson, Marty McDonald, Kyle Wilkinson, Coady MacGillvary, Kim Defosse and Ian MacDonald.

KGB Clinch

For the third straight year a different team will walk away as the regular season league champs. The KGB stretched their lead to seven points over the defending Fat Shafts to clinch the league title with one week remaining.

As far as the playoff positioning goes, there isn't much decided and the last week will sort things out.
Dave Walker makes his sand save on #7.
Aside from the KGB and Fat Shafts, four teams (Dubbers, Southpaws, Whizbangers and CCCP) can still secure a spot in the "A" Flight.

The Rolling Stones are solidly in the "B" Flight but six teams could either fall back or move up to get in. It's almost too confusing for your humble blog master to figure out. The only other guarantee is that the Hackers and Bogies will be in the "C" flight in two weeks. Next week will be fun to watch.

In tonight's matches, the KGB, Whizbangers, Rolling Stones, Fivesome and Latecomers all took six points. The Southpaws grabbed four points while the Fat Shafts earned two. The low round of the night was turned in by Andy Koetstra with a 28 while Kyle Wilkinson shot a 29.

The closest to the pin winners were Dave Walker on hole #8 and Kyle Wilkinson on hole #17. Scott Burmie was the 50/50 winner this week.

Fat Shafts First to 50

As we settle into the heart of the season the Fat Shafts are the first team to surpass 50 points this year despite only taking two points in their match tonight against the impressive CCCP team who took  four points.

The evening was perfect weather wise as it finally felt like a summer night of golf.
Don St.Denis fires at hole #7.
The warm weather and calm air did little however to help the scoring as not one team could post a sub-100 total.

Just three teams swept their matches as the Hackers, KGB and Rolling Stones all eared six points. The Dubbers and Latecomers grabbed four points while the Whizbangers and Fivesome took two points each.

Andy Koetstra shot even par 27 for the low round of the night and moved into a four way tie for the Individual Low Gross.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Peter Hughes on hole #2 and Kyle Wilkinson on hole #11. Mark Kennedy was the 50/50 winner this week.

Team Low Gross Tie

After seeing teams struggle to post low scores to start the season, tonight things improved a great deal with several posting totals in the 90's.
Jim Conley takes aim at hole #12.
In the process, two teams posted scores of 92 as both the Fat Shafts and KGB are tied for the team low gross.

It's also getting crowded in the race for individual low gross as Tim Donaldson shot even par 27 to move into a tie with Kyle Wilkinson and Rick Dean. Other low scores tonight included a 28 by Steve Westlake and 29's by both Jerry Powell and Denis Schick.

It was a night of sweeps in the matches as the Fivesome, Southpaws, KGB, Rolling Stones, Fat Shafts and Wedgers all took six points.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Jimmy Rodgers on hole #1 and Jim Turner on hole #10. Nick Defosse was the 50/50 winner this week.

Shutouts Galore

We were blessed with another beautiful night for golf. The sun was shining, the shorts were on for some but we won't talk about the pesky mosquitoes.

The perfect conditions helped many to post some very impressive scores.
Lyle Williams chips on Hole #3 after his layup.
Both Rick Dean and Kyle Wilkinson shot even par 27 and now share the Individual Low Gross lead.

It was all or nothing when it came time to add up the scores for the night. All six matches were sweeps as the Fat Shafts, Whizbangers, KGB, CCCP, Rolling Stones and Southpaws took all six points up for grabs

For the second week in a row Tom St.Denis took a Closest to the Pin prize by sticking it tight on hole #16. Kevin Wadsworth's first shot of the night on hole #7 finished just over a foot away to take the honour on the front nine. Dave Horner was the 50/50 winner this week.

New Team Low Gross

While driving to the golf course tonight I wasn't sure if we would be lucky enough to get our night in but fortunately the thunderstorms didn't develop and we were able to play a storm free round.

The KGB were the hottest team on this evening as they posted a team score of 93, good enough to take over sole possession of the Team Low Gross spot.
Jim Bruce tees off on Hole 14.
Nice shooting guys. The Low round of the night was turned in by Kyle Wilkinson who shot a two over par 29.

The first place Fat Shafts were one of four teams to sweep all six points in their matches. The Dubbers, Rolling Stones and Whizbangers also blanked their opponents. The KGB came close earning five points while the Wedgers took four from the Latecomers who settled for two points. The Hackers finished the night with a single point.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Tom St.Denis on hole #6 and Ralph Lambert on hole #15. Eric Korver was the 50/50 winner this week.

Season Heats Up

The black flies and mosquitoes were plentiful but nobody seemed to care too much because thankfully we had some warmer weather finally. But judging by the scores, the temperature was the only thing that was hot.

Four of the six matches tonight swept all of the available points as the KGB, Dubbers, Latecomers and Rolling Stones each earned six points. The CCCP took five points while the Fat Shafts managed four points against the Whizbangers who took two. The Southpaws tied the net in their match and picked up one point.

Scoring proved tough tonight as only two teams shot below 100. The KGB posted a 95 and the Fat Shafts turned in a 98.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Symen Korver on hole #4 and Al Wilkinson on hole #13. Tom St.Denis was the 50/50 winner this week.

Nobody's Perfect

After only two weeks, no teams have a perfect start by sweeping all of their points. If this continues it could make for a very interesting season.

There were four teams that swept their matches this evening as the KGB, Southpaws, Bogies and Whizbangers all took six points.
Kim Defosse hit the ninth green with this tee shot.
The Wedgers and Latecomers came close earning five points each while the Fat Shafts and Hackers squeaked out single points for the night.

Rick Dean set the new low mark to beat for Individual Low Gross by shooting a 28. The Wedgers equalled the round by the KGB last week by shooting a 94 to grab a share of the Team Low Gross lead.

The closest to the pin winners were Kyle Wilkinson on hole #2 and Jordan Mercer on hole #11. The 50/50 winner was Thom Christmann.

Just a reminder to make sure when entering the closest to the pin pool that you add the correct amount.

2017 Season Commences

After a long winter and a late start thanks to Mother Nature, we finally kicked off the 2017 Men's League with an exceptional night weather wise.
Bob Donaldson tees off on #16.
Even most of the bugs failed to show up.

A special welcome to the new faces that have joined the fun this season and it was nice to see so many diehards back at it for another year.

Four teams started off strong by sweeping their matches. The Fat Shafts, Fivesome, Rolling Stones and CCCP all earned six points. The Dubbers and KGB each took four points while two points each went to the Latecomers and Whizbangers.

Andy Koetstra and Kyle Wilkinson each shot 29 to set the early target for Individual Low Gross. The Team Low Gross after night one was set by the KGB after shooting a solid round of 94.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Eric Korver on hole #1 and Andy Koetstra on hole #10. Rick Stuckless was the years first 50/50 winner.

I'm short on time this week so I'm afraid I won't be able to dissect the results and give you my usual report on this week's round. If I find time I'll try and come back to this and add to it. I'll try to make up for it after Saturday night's shindig.

Slim Lead for Fat Shafts

With only one week remaining in the regular season some of the final positions for the playoffs have yet to be decided and first overall will come down to the last week.

The Hackers still have a shot at slipping into the A division if they can pass the KGB next week. The Latecomers can tie the Whizbangers for the final spot in the B division which would result in a tie breaker based on their head to head play this season.

The Fat Shafts took six points this week while the Southpaws earned five points which allowed the Fat Shafts to take a one point lead for first overall and puts their fate in their own hands heading into the final week next Wednesday night.

Also taking six points this week were the Rolling Stones, KGB, Hackers and Bogies. The Wedgers earned a single point. Andy Koetstra shot the low round of the week with an even par 27.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Kyle Wilkinson on hole #9 and Barry Defosse on hole #18. The 50/50 winner was Mark Adams.

Battles Abound

There's nothing like some good competition to make things interesting as the season nears its completion and there's still plenty to be decided.

The Fat Shafts have moved to within one point of the Southpaws for first place overall after taking six points from the Hackers tonight. The Rolling Stones grabbed all six points in their match with the Southpaws to remain solidly in third place and are still within striking distance of the top spot.

The final position in the "A" flight is still up for grabs as the KGB and Hackers are tied with 65 points each. The Dubbers are also close with 61 points.
Meanwhile it could come down to the wire for the final position in the "B" flight as the Latecomers and Whizbangers are deadlocked for eighth place.

The Bogies, Whizbangers and Wedgers also grabbed six points in their matches tonight while the Dubbers took four and the Latecomers earned two points.

Kyle Wilkinson continued his strong play posting the low score of the night with a round of even par 27. Congrats to Ian MacDonald on a personal best as he shot a 29 for his lowest nine hole total ever on the course.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Dean on hole #7 and Kim Defosse on hole #16. Paul Reid was the 50/50 winner this week.

Can't Complain About The Weather

Nobody can complain that we haven't had good weather on Wednesday nights this season. Tonight was another warm one but luckily there was some relief with a nice breeze.

Overall the rounds seemed to be a bit on the high side but Kyle Wilkinson still managed to turn in an even par round of 27 for low score of the night.

Four of the six matches were clean sweeps as the Rolling Stones, Hackers, CCCP and  Southpaws took all six points. The Fat Shafts and KGB each grabbed four points while two points went to the Dubbers and Bogies.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Peter Hughes on hole #5 and Paul Reid on hole #14. The 50/50 winner was Denis Schick.

Toasty Night For Golf

On what might have been the hottest night of golf this season, the scores were not quite as on fire as the weather.
Don Muldoon tries to recover on hole #9.
Kyle Wilkinson continued his impressive play this season by posting a 25 which was by far the best round of the night .

We returned to normal points tonight which was fortunate for some teams. The first place Southpaws stumbled slightly allowing the Fat Shafts to move within five points of the lead. The Rolling Stones leapfrogged the KGB to sit in third by one point. The CCCP now have some company in the final spot after moving into a tie with the Fivesome.

The Fat Shafts, Rolling Stones and Bogies all swept their matches tonight to earn six points.
Pre-round chit chat at the clubhouse.
The Hackers, Dubbers and Whizbangers each earned four points while the Southpaws, KGB and CCCP took two points a piece.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Andy Koetstra on hole #3 (his third in five weeks) and Jim Turner on hole #12. Denis Schick was the 50/50 winner this week.

An Ace for Muldoon

I wasn't able to attend tonight's round but I was informed that Don Muldoon stepped up to the first hole and deposited his tee shot into the cup for what I believe is the first hole-in-one of the season for the league. I'm sure he had a wine or two following the round. Congratulations Don!

This was also the last round of double points for the year I believe which puts us half way through the season if you can believe it. Grabbing all 12 points in their matches were the Fat Shafts, Hackers, KGB, Rolling Stones and Southpaws. The CCCP took 8 points while four points went to the Latecomers.

The Team Low Gross lead is becoming a log jam as the Southpaws became the third team to shoot a low round of 88. Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night with a 26. Kyle Wilkinson continued his hot streak by earning his fourth Closest to the Pin prize in five weeks by putting one close on hole #11. Scott Reilly put his tee shot on hole #2 close for the honour on the front nine. This weeks 50/50 winner was Don St.Denis.

Big Night For Wilkinson

Some nights things just seem to go your way and tonight that was the case for Kyle Wilkinson. Kyle set the new mark for Individual Low Gross by shooting a three under par score of 24.

Wilkinson wasn't quite done there as he also grabbed the closest to the pin prize for the third time in four weeks by putting his shot tight on hole #1. Oh, and he also won the 50/50 prize this week and led his team to a round total of 88 to tie them with the Fat Shafts for the Team Low Gross.

This week also saw changes on the leaderboard as the Southpaws took full advantage of the double points night to take all 12 from the Fat Shafts and move back into first place. The Rolling Stones and Bogies also earned 12 points each. Elsewhere, the Dubbers and KGB took 10 points while the Latecomers grabbed eight. Taking four points were the Wedgers while the Fivesome and Hackers took a pair of points each.

Andy Koetstra picked up his second closest to the pin in three weeks putting his tee shot tight on hole #10. Next week will be the final round of double points.

Fat Shafts Shoot 88

On this first night of double points play, the opportunity for some teams to make a move in the standings was there for the taking. But it also meant you could fall in the standings as well. Tonight we saw a little of both.

KGB took advantage moving from fifth to third place leapfrogging a couple of teams.
Al Wilkinson fires a shot on #12.
The Hackers also moved up two places into fifth place. This meant some teams faltered as the Rolling Stones and Latecomers each fell two places to sixth and eighth spot. The Wedgers also moved up two places to ninth after doubling their season total in one night.

We have a new leader for the Team Low Gross as the Fat Shafts turned in a solid round of 88. The low individual rounds with a score of 28 were shot by Norm Toyne, Andy Koetstra and Paul Dicrescenzo.

Three teams swept their matches as the Hackers, Wedgers and KGB grabbed 12 points each.
Kyle Wilkinson intense on hole 14.
The Fat Shafts increased their lead slightly by taking 10 points. The Whizbangers and Southpaws each took 8 points while the Bogies and Latecomers snagged four. The Rolling Stones earned a pair of points for the night.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Marty McDonald on hole #9 while Kyle Wilkinson hit the pin on hole #18 for the honour. The 50/50 winner was Rob Campbell.

Ideal Conditions to Golf

Scores aside perhaps, I don't think anyone could complain about the conditions for golf tonight.
Dave Reid misses a lengthy putt on hole 13.
Sure, there were some bugs but it was an ideal temperature and a beautiful sunny night.

The standings continue to be crowded in sections after play this evening. The Southpaws moved to within one point of the front running Fat Shafts while the Rolling Stones stumbled a bit allowing the Dubbers to move into third place.

Just like last week, three teams swept their matches as the KGB, Hackers and Southpaws took six points. The Fat Shafts and Dubbers came close taking five points each. The Whizbangers had four points while the Rolling Stones grabbed two. The Bogies and Fivesome took one point each.

Tim Donaldson came up one stroke shy of grabbing a share of the Individual Low Gross score by shooting 27 tonight. The Southpaws as a team shot a 93 which also left them short of equaling the mark of 91 held by the Whizbangers. The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Dean on hole #7 and Kyle Wilkinson on hole #16. The 50/50 winner was Dave Powell.

Rough Night For Scoring

It's hard to say why the scores were so high tonight when it was such a perfect evening for golf but every team struggled to score well.
Dave Powell tees off on Hole #7.
I don't recall another night in my years in the league where no team scored under 100. The lowest team gross was turned in by the Southpaws with a 102.

As far as the nights match ups were concerned, only the Fat Shafts, Dubbers and Latecomers took all six points. The Rolling Stones took five points while the Hackers and Southpaws each grabbed four points.
Lyle Williams shows his form on the 2nd hole.
Earning two points were the Bogies and KGB while the Wedgers took a single point.

Not everyone struggled as the low score for the night was turned in by Kyle Wilkinson with a 28. The Closest to the Pin winners were Coady MacGillvary on hole #4 and Kyle Wilkinson on hole #13. The 50/50 winner was Peter Hughes.
