2017 Playoffs - Round One

Round one of the playoffs is in the books and some teams played well while others struggled but after only nine holes nobody is out of it.

In the "A" Flight the KGB and Fat Shafts share the lead having both shot 95. The Southpaws are only four shots back with a 99 while the Dubbers are seven shots off the lead after scoring a 102.

The "B" Flight is a bit more open as the Rolling Stones shot 103 and have a five stroke lead over the CCCP who put up a 108.
Steve Powell takes aim at Hole #8.
The Whizbangers sit seven shots back after shooting a 110 while a score of 114 leaves the Fivesome 11 strokes off the lead.

The Latecomers have the early lead in the "C" Flight after shooting 100 on the night. Seven shots back in second are the Wedgers who posted a 107 and a shot behind them are the Hackers who scored a 108. The Bogies had an off night posting a 115 but are still within striking distance.

The low score of the night was turned in by Kyle Wilkinson with an even par 27. Several others posted sub-30 rounds for the night.

The closest to the pin winners were Tim Donaldson, Paul Reid, Tyler Donaldson, Marty McDonald, Kyle Wilkinson, Coady MacGillvary, Kim Defosse and Ian MacDonald.

Playoffs continue next Wednesday night from the white tees once again and on Saturday September 9th we play the final 18 holes from the Blue tees followed by the wrap up party.

St.Denis Hot Again

When you're hot, you're hot and for Tom St.Denis, he's on fire when it comes to the Closest to the Pin holes. For the third straight week Tom walked away with a share of the pot by landing his ball closest on hole #8. Scott Reilly was dialed in and earned the honour on hole #17.

If you forgot your bug spray you were extra busy during tonight's round swatting the pesky mosquitoes between or even during your shots.

For the first time in a long time there was a forfeit as the Rolling Stones were unable to field a team which resulted in the Fivesome being awarded all six points. Also taking six were the Dubbers, CCCP, Wedgers and Fat Shafts. The Southpaws earned five points while a single point went to the Hackers.

Paul Scobie shot the Low round of the evening with a 29. Tom St.Denis and Andy Koetstra each shot 30. No teams came close to challenging the Team Low Gross. Marty MacDonald  was the 50/50 winner this week.

Battles Abound

There's nothing like some good competition to make things interesting as the season nears its completion and there's still plenty to be decided.

The Fat Shafts have moved to within one point of the Southpaws for first place overall after taking six points from the Hackers tonight. The Rolling Stones grabbed all six points in their match with the Southpaws to remain solidly in third place and are still within striking distance of the top spot.

The final position in the "A" flight is still up for grabs as the KGB and Hackers are tied with 65 points each. The Dubbers are also close with 61 points.
Meanwhile it could come down to the wire for the final position in the "B" flight as the Latecomers and Whizbangers are deadlocked for eighth place.

The Bogies, Whizbangers and Wedgers also grabbed six points in their matches tonight while the Dubbers took four and the Latecomers earned two points.

Kyle Wilkinson continued his strong play posting the low score of the night with a round of even par 27. Congrats to Ian MacDonald on a personal best as he shot a 29 for his lowest nine hole total ever on the course.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Rick Dean on hole #7 and Kim Defosse on hole #16. Paul Reid was the 50/50 winner this week.

Playoffs Are Set

It came down to the last night and in one case a single point but the regular season is complete and the playoffs are set to begin next week.

The "A" division teams were all known except for the final spot and the Fat Shafts leapfrogged the KGB tonight to grab fourth place by one point. That was the only real change that took place in determining where the teams are placed. The Southpaws claimed the regular season title for the fourth year in a row, edging out the Rolling Stones.

On this night, the CCCP, Dubbers, Southpaws, Rolling Stones and Fat Shafts all grabbed six points. The KGB took four points while the Latecomers took two points. The Closest to the Pin winners were Denis Schick on hole #1 and Eric Korver on hole #10. The 50/50 winner was Marty MacDonald.

Week one of the playoffs will start next Wednesday night followed by another nine holes the following Wednesday and then the 18 hole final on the Saturday that week beginning at 3pm.

Here are the playoff divisions:

"A" Flight
1. Southpaws
2. Rolling Stones
3. Dubbers
4. Fat Shafts

"B" Flight
1. KGB
2. Wedgers
3. Whizbangers
4. Fivesome

"C" Flight
1. Bogies
2. Latecomers
3. Hackers
4. CCCP

Par Round for Koetstra

Andy Koetstra shot the low round of the night with an even par 27 to help lead his Fat Shafts team to one of their more impressive nights in some time.
Lyle Williams tees off on hole #4.
The Fat Shafts also produced the low Team Gross for the evening by turning in an 88. That was still three shots off Southpaws low round of the year as they hold the lead with an 85.

Lyle Williams came within inches of a hole in one on hole #3 but that was good enough to earn him the Closest to the Pin on the front nine. Marty MacDonald tucked it closest on the back nine with a good shot on hole #12. The 50/50 was won this week by Bill Clapp.

It was another feast or famine night in the matches. The Fat Shafts, Southpaws, Fivesome, Dubbers and Whizbangers all took six points. The earned four points while the Bogies took two.

Three Weeks To Go

It hardly feels like summer has even started, yet after tonight's round we only have three weeks of regular season play remaining before the playoffs begin on August 27th.
Colin MacDonald tees off on hole #1.
So with time running short, teams need to make a move if they hope to improve their spot in the standings and spots in the playoff divisions.

On this night, four teams dominated their matches as the Southpaws, Wedgers, CCCP and KGB took all six points up for grabs. The Dubbers came close earning five points. The Rolling Stones grabbed four more points from the Latecomers who took two and the Fat Shafts earned a single point on the night.

Andy Koetstra drains his putt on #1.
Despite the nice evening conditions there weren't many impressive rounds to be had as the low scores for the night went to father and son duo Al and Kyle Wilkinson who both shot one over par 28.

The Closest to the Pin prizes went to Don Muldoon with his shot on #4 while Paul Scobie took the honours on the back nine on hole #13. The 50/50 winner this week was Peter Hughes.

See you next Wednesday night!

Is This July?

I can't believe I'm saying this but where's the heat? Two weeks in a row we've had ideal clear and cool conditions for golfing. The typical sweltering heat of summer is nowhere to be found here. But of course that can change so we'll enjoy these conditions while we can.

Dave Walker tees off on Hole #1.
The low scores of the night were impressive but not good enough to challenge for the Individual Low Gross. Kyle Wilkinson and Nick Vangemeren tied for the low scores of the night with even par 27. I don't know who had the high score for the evening but there's a good chance Art Mansfield of the Fat Shafts came close by shooting a 46. Good job Art!

In the matches for the evening, the Southpaws, Fat Shafts, Rolling Stones and Dubbers swept all six points up for grabs. The Wedgers earned five points, the CCCP four, Whizbangers two and a single point went to the Bogies.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Nick Vangemeren on hole #2 and Tom Christmann on hole #11. The 50/50 winner this week was Marty MacDonald.

Below you'll find a few more short videos of the nights action to enjoy and perhaps chuckle at. Please note there might be the odd bit of foul language so if that offends you, please skip them. I'm too lazy to edit them and bleep stuff out.

Settling Into A Routine

With a few weeks under our belts now, things are starting to settle into the groove for the season. And after a day that saw impressive heat, we actually had to bundle up a bit tonight for the round. But at least there was no rain although it looked like it might most of the round.
David Wharry misses his birdie putt.

In the matches tonight according to the scores submitted at the time I recorded them, the Rolling Stones did some damage against the league leading Southpaws taking all six points up for grabs. Also sweeping their matches were the Fat Shafts, Whizbangers and Bogies. The Dubbers took five points, Wedgers earned four, CCCP took 2 points and the Latecomers took 1.

Jerry Powell continued his impressive season of golf by grabbing the Closest to the Pin on hole #5 while Paul Reid stuck it close on hole #14. The 50/50 winner this week was Rick Turtle.

We enter June next week which means the first of the 18 hole rounds aren't far off so be prepared for them coming soon.
Ian MacDonald tees off on hole 4.

Sad News Prior To Start The Season

Our League received some sad news prior to the start of the season when we learned that Ron MacDonald had passed away on Monday at the age of 78.

Ron was a long time member of the Dubbers. He was a quiet man on the course but was always willing to share a laugh or some good conversation and he will be sadly missed. Our most sincere condolences go out to Ron's wife Karen and the entire family.

Friends are invited to call at the Weaver Family Funeral Home - East Chapel, 29 Bay St., Trenton on Friday April 25th, 2014 from 10 - 11 AM. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11 AM in the East Chapel.

Welcome Back Humidty

I think we finished the weeks of 18 holes just in time as the summer humidity appears to have finally made it's sticky return to the area. It makes for a bit of an uncomfortable round but I think we can all agree it's still better than rain. However, we end the round just as wet.

Al Wilkinson had the low round of the night as he shot his way to a 28. I also heard that Marty MacDonald had a strong outing with a 30 which was made all the more exceptional by the bank shots he made off several trees in the process. That's what you call "course knowledge."

Three teams took all six points up for grabs tonight as the KGB, Dubbers and Rolling Stones won their matches. The Fat Shafts had a five point night as the Fivesome earned a single point. Elsewhere the CCCP took four points, the Wedgers and Southpaws each grabbed three points and the Hackers earned two points.

Ron MacDonald was the Closest to the Pin winner on Hole #2 while Kyle Wilkinson took the honour on Hole #11. This week's 50/50 winner was Benny Brock.

18 Holes - Week Three

The first place Southpaws turned in an impressive nine hole round tonight shooting a team total of 87 which was good enough to take over the Team Low Gross lead by themselves. However, their match versus the Dubbers was fairly even with the Southpaws taking 7 points and the Dubbers 5.

The Whizbangers were the only team to take all 12 points up for grabs during this final week of 18 holes. The Wedgers came close to doing the same but fell short taking 11 points in their match with the Fat Shafts who earned a single point. The Bogies grabbed 10 points from the CCCP as the Russians earned two points. Elsewhere the Latecomers took 8 points, the Rolling Stones and KGB split their match earning 6 points each and the Hackers took 4 points.

The low round of the night went to Norm Toyne of the Wedgers with a 25 which matches his previous lowest of the season and good enough to hold the lead for Individual Low Gross honours.

The Closest to the Pin prizes were won by Paul Scobie on Hole #1 and Andy Koetstra on Hole #10. Marty MacDonald was this weeks 50/50 winner.

Just a reminder that starting next week we're back to playing nine holes for the rest of the season.

Wildlife and Insects Abound

On any given night at the golf course we can see various forms of wildlife. Some of the animal variety and some in the form of the golfers themselves. Tonight some golfers were fortunate enough to see deer while a family of foxes have also been spotted around the 12th hole. Mosquitoes were plentiful on hole #15 on this night although none of us thought they were cute and cuddly.

I was also informed that someone hit a horse to the left of the 12th hole and Dave Walker was wondering who it might have been. Rumour has it that Nick VanGemeren was the guilty party but that was only according to Dan Jess.

As for the golf on this beautiful evening there were some good and some not so good scores turned in but nobody really cared considering the ideal conditions. Grabbing all six points tonight were the Dubbers, KGB, Whizbangers and Wedgers. The Rolling Stones and Southpaws took four each while the Fat Shafts and CCCP earned two.

The 50/50 winner was Ron MacDonald. Closest to the Pin winners were Eric Korver on hole #7 and Kim Defosse on hole #16.

Now That Was A Nice Night

No mosquitoes, no black flies, no strong winds and best of all...no rain. The conditions were so ideal for our round of golf tonight I had to double check to make sure it was actually Wednesday.

Everyone seemed to have a good time as we played just nine holes from the blue tees as we made up a lost round from earlier in the season.

OK, maybe not everyone had a good time. Dan Jess of the Fat Shafts might have be been grumbling a bit after he sent his tee shot on hole 10 into the parking lot. Luckily nobody was injured and no vehicles were damaged this time according to Dan who had his playing partners in stitches. Not real stitches...just lots of laughing. Good thing Dan can take a ribbing because he got a lot of it after the round.

The KGB, Dubbers, Rolling Stones and Wedgers all took 6 points while the Fivesome earned 5, the Whizbangers 4, Southpaws 2 and a single point went to the CCCP.

Jerry Powell was Closest to the Pin on hole #2 while Marty MacDonald stuck it close on hole #11. John VanValls took home the 50/50 prize.

Have a great Canada Day long weekend guys and we'll see you next Wednesday.

Donaldson Does It Again

It would seem that Tim Donaldson didn't enjoy sharing the Individual Low Gross with Steve Westlake at -2 (25) so tonight he turned in another very impressive round of -3 (24) to take sole possession of the honour. Congratulations on the great round Tim.

Four teams swept all six points from their opponents tonight. They included the Southpaws, Fat Shafts, Wedgers and Dubbers. The Bogies and KGB took five points each. With their six points tonight, the Southpaws became the first team to break 100 points on the season with 103.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Andy Koetstra on hole #8 and Ron MacDonald on #17. Matt Couperus was this weeks 50/50 winner.
